All dogs should receive a wholesome, safe diet that contains all the nutrients he or she requires for a healthy life, with nothing in excess and nothing in deficiency. Additionally, almost half - some say more than half of all dogs in America are overweight, so something else your dog shouldn't have in excess is calories.

Dry (kibble) diets, homemade diets, and canned diets, or a combination of those, all have their place. Discuss your dog's dietary needs, and his or her weight, with your veterinarian.
